It gives me great happiness to write a note for the second issue of the Indian Journal of Breast Imaging. The inaugural issue was brought out by the founding Editorial Board, and now they have passed the baton to the current board, which will guide the journal over the next 3 years. I extend my congratulations to Dr. Ekta Dhamija and her esteemed team whose collective wisdom and experience will undoubtedly enrich the journal. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire editorial board for their hard work and dedication in bringing out this issue. Their commitment to wards maintaining high standards and ensuring the publication of quality articles is truly commendable. I am confident that under their leadership, the Indian Journal of Breast Imaging will continue to grow and make significant contributions to this field.

The journal of a scientific society serves as its academic voice and expresses the stream of thought and research of its members. It is essential for members to have their own platform, even though numerous similar forums exist globally. The journal of a national society is likely to publish articles that highlight challenges unique to our country, explore methods for managing these challenges within our resource environment, and offer insights that may be far more topical and interesting compared to an international journal.

Breast Imaging in India, and Breast Imaging Society, India (BISI), are well entrenched and occupy a prominent place in many academic fora. This is crucial in the fight against breast cancer and the suffering it inflicts upon the huge number of individuals affected in our nation. Although breast cancer is a major global health issue, the challenges encountered in India differ considerably from those in the Western world, which is where much of the existing literature comes from. The prevalence of late-stage diagnosis, lack of awareness, and limited access to advanced medical facilities are some of the hurdles we must address. By sharing knowledge and advancements through this journal, we aim to bridge those gaps. The articles published in this journal will provide insights into the latest techniques in breast imaging, case studies highlighting challenges faced, different diseases seen in India, and provide research findings that could pave the way to improved diagnostic and treatment protocols. Indeed, we hope that many radiologists will read this journal and enhance their practice to detect and accurately diagnose all breast diseases, not just breast cancer. The expertise of our community of breast imagers is crucial for identifying abnormalities at an early stage, which can significantly improve prognosis and survival rates.

This journal aims to be a valuable resource for radiologists, offering the latest information and research to enhance their skills and knowledge. However, this journal is not just for radiologists. It is for everyone involved in the fight against breast cancer – oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, and even policy makers. By fostering a multidisciplinary approach, we can ensure comprehensive care for patients and work towards reducing the burden of breast cancer in our country. Collaborative efforts and shared knowledge are key for making significant progress in this field.

I also urge all members of the society to actively participate in the journal. As we have observed in BISI, learning from each other and sharing tips and tricks acquired through years of experience in the field is the best way to grow. When one of us improves as an imager, the entire community benefits, since we are truly a sum of our collective efforts. Therefore, your contributions, whether in the form of research articles, case reports, reviews, or letters to the editor are invaluable. By sharing your experiences and findings, you not only enhance your own knowledge but also contribute to the collective wisdom of the breast imaging community. Let us work together to make this journal a beacon of knowledge and a catalyst for progress in breast imaging and breast cancer management.

In conclusion, I am excited about the future of the Indian Journal of Breast Imaging. With the continued support and contributions from all members, I am confident that we will achieve great things. Let us use this platform to advance our understanding, improve our practices, and ultimately, make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by breast cancer.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Madhavi Chandra

General Secretary, BISI (2023 – 25)
