Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Greetings of the festive season! I am writing this brief note to you on the release of the Inaugural issue of the Indian Journal of Breast Imaging with a great sense of joy, relief and accomplishment.
The Breast Imaging Society, India (BISI) started as a small group of radiologists interested in breast imaging and has progressed into its current day avatar as one of the most dynamic imaging societies in the country, with its members and leadership striving every day to find ways to disseminate information related to breast imaging as well as advocating for better patient care and outcomes.
Breast imaging itself has come a long way from just conventional mammography with digital breast tomosynthesis, high-frequency ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) providing a wealth of added imaging information to enable accurate diagnosis as well as providing new directions for research, with ultrafast MRI emerging as the latest kid on the block. More recent techniques for biopsy and intervention, including MR-guided biopsy, have helped us target lesions that were unimaginable just a few years ago.
Our annual conferences and outreach programmes have helped us to get together and share our experiences, cases and challenges, and also help faculty mentor the younger members. This also brought about the realization that there was a lot of experience and clinical work which was being done in all corners of the country which deserve to be shared and published so that it can be readily available in print and online and could be accessed on demand at the convenience of our members and even other radiologists.
This led us to envisage the journal, the first copy you hold in your hands. The journal was a nebulous idea that became a lofty goal for us. Had we known the compliances and work that went into it, we may have reconsidered venturing into this territory! A lot of sweat and tears (thankfully, no blood yet) went into this journal, starting from publisher selection and comparisons, IT support, editorial team selections, setting up of peer review process, call for articles and even cover design.
I hope my entire editorial team and you will enjoy the journal and take it forward from here and that these baby steps will turn into giant strides. Long live BISI!
